“Harmony, Madness, and Justice.” I whispered to myself as I looked over three distinctively different open books, all lying side by side on the table I was using to study. I turned to an entry in the first book, “… And over the innocent shall I always be a protector…” I flipped to another page. “…For the bloodshed of a woman or child, even in war, is among the highest of sacred violations… Remember, remember the oaths that you have made to harmony, for it is the only way that one can find peace of body and spirit.

I studied the pages of the first book for about four minutes, and then turned to the second. “Behold, it is by our seeds that the conspiring spears of the wicked are set upon each other… If the loss of innocence is required for the demands of peace then do not burden your minds… for the greater victory will justify the lesser loss… And thine actions shall be rewarded with the peace thou hast sown.”

I turned to the third book, which was a compilation of various journals. “I, Roberto Gheston Thrisfalen, have started this creed as a single chain to a great link. Over time we shall become a vast, steel net that no man, nor woman can escape…Through our swords, there shall be no good or evil. All that shall remain is justice… No bloodline has endured such a burden as our linage… Justice is the only way to find true peace.”

I put the final book down and pondered my reading. Peace… What is peace? Is it kindness, and charity? Is it silence and desolation? Is it balance and justice? I once knew… when I was younger and stronger, I knew which was right. I used to think that all were right. I used to think that all had the answers to peace. But now I realize that peace is unattainable. Peace is one if life’s infinitive driving forces to help men to better themselves, but it is never truly attainable.

I looked away from the book. I could feel my eyes begin to water, but I quickly wiped them. I shall not shed another tear for my past, but rather, I should be focused on the future. I still have innocence that I must protect now; those that I have lost are passed. And since none of these doctrines of peace have saved anyone, then I will have to make secret war on them all.

I pulled out a piece of parchment and began to write.

Dear Nila:

I beg your forgiveness for my resignation from among the noble protectors of the treasure, but much like your late lover and my late friend Yansen, you have sat in your secret places and allowed Madness and Bartholomew to bring this country to the dust.

I confess, I am the partial reason for my own misery, but I have forsaken my past sins and my loathsome titles. The only reason I remain in this state of compelled servitude is not because of love for any of the orders, but rather I remain to keep the only three people I care about in this world safe.

I hope that this letter is taken in by an understanding heart, and a wise mind. I hope that you can forgive me for severing my connection to the our cause, but I must do it. It would be better that the power in that place of secrecy be destroyed than it fall into the wrong hands. If a return letter is sent, I hope that you will not refer to me as a Thrisfalen, for that name is truly dead.
