I and twenty-four Jerican constables smashed into Lord Lar’s private dressing chambers in the Tabakka. We moved quickly from room to room submitting or killing any West Port Loyalist that were within. Those that ran out of the dressing chamber were quickly seized by another group of Bartholomic guards that waited quietly outside in the palace’s auxiliary hallways. We found Gilden Lar in a powder room among several scantily clad women.
After I had ordered the young women removed Lord Lar leaped to his feet. “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!”
I put his temper aside and took out my imperial warrant. I then read it to the boiling man. “High Martial Magistrate Henry Gilden Lar, You are to be put under imperial protection and removed from West Port immediately as this city will soon be deemed unsafe for all ranking magistrates. You will then be taken to Iron Station, where you will await further instu…
“IRON STATION!! That is a prison!” Lord Lar Screamed out.
“Where you will await, indefinitely, for further instruction. Signed by his royal majesty, King Robert Bartholomew, Lord of the Central and Eastern Kingdom.” I lowered the page and ordered my men to seize Lord Lar, who gave quite a struggle.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME!!! GET OFF, YOU DOGS!!! I WILL HAVE ALL OF YOUR HEADS!!!” He screamed as my men dragged him away.
I stood silently for a minute, enjoying the décor of the room. It must be hard for him, living in such splendor and then having it all taken away. I moved to Lord Lar’s cushioned chair and sat down. I tilted my head back and relaxed for the first and probably last time of that day. My eyes closed and I went over the lines that I would have to give to the delegates at the ball this evening.
I had almost fallen asleep when a sharp thump caused me to leap from my seat. I turned to a closed curtain where the source of the sound must have originated. I called out to a deputy to assist me, but none were in earshot. I crept quietly to the curtain and slowly slipped a dueling knife from my boot. I slid the curtain back and found one of Lord Lar’s “Entertainments” out cold on the floor. I checked the girl for a pulse and found a steady beat.
I was about to move the girl out of the room when a voice came from behind. “Don’t bother Captain Derrenal, that young lady will soon awake. I didn't want any witnesses, even if they are my own.”
I spun around and found an unfortunately familiar face. “Nila, You sure know how to sneak up on a person.” I jested.
She did not give any sign of amusement. “Did anyone in your intelligence networks find any leads on the whereabouts of the key components I spoke to you about?”
“I’m afraid we have been a little bit busy with other things.” I laughed. “Speaking of which, how has it been trying to find a new base of operations.”
Again, no expression change. “You are a fool to think that my hand does not reach farther than West Port, Jerican.” She finally put on a smile. “What makes you think Bartholomew will have any use of you when this city falls?”
“Well, I have always wanted to be a farmer.” I joked back. “But seriously, no one in my network has found anything about those key components. However, I just received word about an hour ago that the one they was originally found with the key was killed in an attempted escape.”
“What?” Nila’s voice sounded angry. I confess it was frightening. This lady had killed many of my Jerican, and so I knew when I should cut the taunting.
“That’s all I know, not specifics on that report.” I said matter-of-factually
Nila stood silently for a moment and then walked to the knocked out girl and woke her. Her voice changed to that of impassiveness. “I recommend that you release the remaining young ladies. It looks like I will have to reassign them to another political figure. I just hope that your men are still alive." She and her agent started to walk out of the room when Nila turned again. "Good luck with that farm."
(Sorry it is choppy, my parents are screaming at me to clean the chicken coop)
